- The scenery is stunning.
- The history is fascinating.

- The people are friendly and welcoming.
- It's affordable and convenient.
- It's beautiful and peaceful year-round.

Regions of New Mexico
New Mexico is divided into three regions: North, Central, and South. Each area has its distinct characteristics and attractions.
The North region is home to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Rio Grande Valley, and the T Pueblo. This region is known for its stunning landscapes and outdoor activities, such as skiing, hiking, and rafting.

Campground Choices
With so many reasons to visit New Mexico, you can imagine that it's quite popular (especially during the Summer). Luckily there are quite a few campgrounds to choose from!
Choosing the best New Mexico RV parks that works best for you shouldn't be time-consuming. Especially since, we've done some of the leg work and found some parks for you!
The campgrounds listed below are within an easy drive of most things you'll want to see and do.
We are not affiliated with any of these campground/RV parks (or paid). All opinions are our own 🙂
Why We Chose These RV Parks
It is worth mentioning that everyone has their own criteria for a perfect RV Campground. Our criteria may be different than yours, and that is totally fine! Each family has a different RV, other interests/hobbies, and unique needs.
Some people have kids and pets, and others have none. Either way, the New Mexico RV parks we chose are on the list because I believe they will work for most everyone - maybe not all, but MOST.
Tell us what you look for in a great RV campground? What are your criteria? Please share in the comment section below. We'd LOVE to hear from you!
All of the campgrounds we've recommended meet the following criteria:
- We would personally stay there
- Max 50 amp service
- Full hookups
- Wi-Fi
- Big RV accessible
- Pet-friendly
- Kid-friendly
- Close proximity to the important sites
Our Personal Criteria:
We have a 2020 40' toy hauler (fifth-wheel), 3 teens, and 2 dogs. Our RV is newer, so we hope to keep it looking newer.
While we aren't necessarily looking for the luxury experience, we want to find a campground with an easily accessible road and a wide enough site (so trees can't scratch the exterior finish). We hope it isn't too dusty or muddy, OR on top of our neighbors. Gravel and/or concrete pads are important.
We also need full hookups, a dog area (or at least a grassy patch for them to do their business), Wi-Fi (for work and our teens), and cable is a bonus - but not necessary.
While my husband and I prefer a quiet, serene environment, our kids like action and things to do; we try and locate places that work for all of us, which is hard because we seem to have opposite interests, right? We aren't asking too much, are we? 🙂 Does anyone with teens know what I am talking about? LOL
Top Tips
Notes About New Mexico RV Parks
We fell in love with the beauty and diversity of the environment in New Mexico. Here are some notes about what you can expect:
- Much of New Mexico is a dry desert climate, and you will find gravel sites at most RV parks. Parcels of concrete are minimal and green grass is minimal.
- Unless you are in the mountains, trees that provide shade are minimal.
- It can be very hot during the day and quite chilly at night.
- Wind gusts seem to come out of nowhere, in all areas that we stayed. We would recommend pulling your awning in before you leave your campsite.
Reservations
- Call and make a reservation. This way, you can get a knowledgeable person who can help you select the perfect site. While making a reservation online is convenient, a computer does not always know best.
Getting There
- Ask the campground for the best driving route. Most will list this information on their site, but if not, ask them when you have them on the phone when making your reservations. Most of you who own a large RV know this but - never rely on your GPS directions without confirming the route first. While most of the RV campgrounds listed below are easily accessible, double-check.
Recommended RV Parks
In random order (not by favorites), these are our recommendations for the best RV Parks in New Mexico. If you know of any more that deserve to be listed, be sure to let us know! 🙂

"A wonderful and very small RV park. Welcoming and friendly owners. Incredible views of the mountains. Great location in Taos."
We loved this place. It's a small and gated RV park with only 19 RV sites. The sites are large, and the views of the mountains are amazing. "A very nice RV park with beautifully landscaped sites. Lot's of ammenities, and very close to Elephant Butte Lake and State Park (New Mexico's largest lake)."
Elephant Butte RV park is somewhat centrally located within the state and a few of the areas you might want to visit. We used it as a branching-off point for weekend trips to other areas of the state.

Santa Fe Skies RV Park
"Great location. Very friendly staff. Close to Santa Fe, easy in and out of the RV park itself. On the Turqoise Trail."
Santa Fe Skies is in a perfect spot for exploring the Santa Fe area. The location and proximity to the highway (not too close) were great. It was easy to get off the highway and into the park. The park overall was very clean, well maintained, and the staff super helpful. We would definitely stay here again.
Amenities and Activities
There is a walking path around the perimeter of the RV park and a dog park. There is free wifi but no cable. Cell service was good, and we have Verizon and AT&T.
Sites
There are 98 sites, about half of those are pull-through, and the rest are back in. All sites have 20/30/50 amp service and water. All but 1 site have sewer.
We found a few of the sites to be on the narrow side, and in a few instances, we noticed that the exit from certain pull-through sites could also be tight, depending upon what size your RV is.
For instance, we had an awkward tree on the left-hand exit side of our site (Aster #2), as well as a neighboring vehicle in front of us that hung out too far into the road. It took some extra care and shuffling to get our big fifth wheel out but all went fine!

High Desert RV Park, Albuquerque
"Easy on and off from I-40, just West of Albuquerque - very convenient location and a great jumping off point to see the area."
High Desert RV Park is very well kept and clean. All the roads in the park are paved, and it was easy to navigate our fifth wheel in and out. Our pull-through site was large, and we really appreciated the fenced-in dog areas. Many people seem to stay here just overnight due to its proximity to I-40, but it is absolutely worth visiting longer!
